Sights that Slid Into the Sea
A catastrophic earthquake in the ancient year of 1343 caused most of Amalfi’s prominent and picturesque buildings to crumble and career into the sea. This inauspicious occurrence has therefore left the city with but a few historical heritage sights, which include the Cattedrale di Sant’Andrea, an architectural amalgamation which features booming bell towers, brash bronze doors and magnificent mosaics. Natural beauty comes in the shape of Grotta dello Smeraldo, a gorgeous grotto that emits an ethereal emerald glow from the surrounding water. Soaring stalactites and stalagmites decorate the deep and cavernous interior and an air of magical mystery permeates the sight.
Important Papers
Paying homage to the town’s illustrious industrial past is the 13th century Paper Mill, home to the small yet stimulating Paper Museum, which exhibits original paper presses and paper production methods. In the guided tour, visitors will discover the history of paper making and have an opportunity to purchase original stationary sets.
