The Old World Wonder of Darlington

Occupying a pleasant pocket of countryside in the delightful county of Durham, Darling offers visitors a provincial taste of English life. The impossibly picturesque Old Town presents an architectural banquet begging to be devoured by cultural travellers; Gothic towers, sanctimonious churches and medieval market squares are just a slim selection of Darlington’s cultural highlights. Absorb the town’s unique atmosphere with a wander amidst the historical houses and atmospheric squares, not forgetting to indulge in the quintessential English past time of drinking ale in a pleasant pub.

Striking Sights and National Icons

The town’s most prominent and picturesque icon is undoubtedly the Clock Tower, a striking symbol of Gothic grandeur with a rich historical heritage. Designed by the same bell maker who created the world famous Big Ben Bell, the bell still chimes an hourly herald today.

St. Cuthberts Church is a fine example of ecclesiastical elegance that typifies imitable English style; known as the Lady of the North due to its supreme spire and authoritative presence, the church was built in the 12 century and still functions as a sacred place of worship and is steeped in local legend, more of which can be discovered in the seemingly infinite interior.

Renowned Market Houses

Darlington’s bustling centre of commerce is undoubtedly the Market Hall, an impressive and austere building that houses on of the town’s richest traditions, the market. Designed by prominent architect Alfred Waterhouse, the same artist responsible for London’s Natural History Museum, the building houses an atmospheric and eventful array of colourful stalls bursting with local produce and hand-made souvenirs.
