Monschau: Provinical and Picturesque
The German town of Monschau is the epitome of quintessential culture and captivating quaintness; the authoritative castle gazes solemnly over the sloping slate roofs and wonderfully white facades of the town’s houses while the surrounding hills impose a strong sense of serenity. In the historic heart of the town, half-timbered houses and intriguing monuments evoke the illustrious past of Monschau. Wander the sinuous streets to discover architectural gems or simply sit beside the gentle River Rur to absorb the palpable peace of the town; the internationally renowned Christmas market is another unmissable event in this tantalising town.
Castles and Collections
Irrefutably Monschau’s most legendary landmark, Monschau Castle is a stolid and stout structure whose stone walls and postured turrets allude to a turbulent past. Spectacular views can be enjoyed from the castle, which is now used as a cultural centre that hosts art exhibitions and music concerts.
Another one of Monschau’s most alluring attractions is the Red House, an iconic structure whose red façade and opulent interior attracts many visitors. Built by an affluent merchant in the 18th century, the house features a world famous wooden staircase and an impressive collection of art.
Beer Glorious Beer
Monschau is famed for its production of popular beer, so there’s no better place to discover the complex production processes than the Beer Museum Felsenkeller. Short films, photography and models are all used to explain the history and techniques of brewing; in the subterranean depths of the museum, visitors can enjoy the intriguing structure of the old beer cellar, an area created by using explosives to penetrate the mountainous rock.
A Luscious Location
Zum Haller Restaurant enjoys a luscious location upon the banks of the delightful River Rur and serves a stunning selection of internationally inspired classics. Sink into a chair beside a smouldering fire in order to sample some of the hearty and wholesome signature dishes which are sure to pleasure every palate.
