Sunny coastal resort: Bournemouth
Bournemouth is a large town on the south Coast of England. It has a population of 160,000 but it is still regarded as a town instead of a city which is unusual given its size. It is very popular amongst UK holidaymakers and boasts a lovely long sandy beach.
Getting around Bournemouth
If you arrive into Bournemouth via the airport, then you can easily access a regular shuttle bus service directly into the town centre. Furthermore, if you wish to save your legs the Yellow Buses provide access to all main shopping areas in the town. If you have time to venture farther afield, then South West Trains facilitate the region.
While you are in Bournemouth, make sure you…
Dip in the sea
The most popular feature of this town is its promenade. The coast line sits on the edge of the beautiful New Forest which is a large area of natural beauty. Even though the UK is not known as being the warmest holiday destination, during the summer months this region enjoys more than average hours of sunshine. The water is clean and shallow so it is the perfect spot for a nice picnic and a paddle. The best places to enjoy the sea are Fisherman’s WalkHengistbury Head to mention but two. Don’t worry if you arrived a little unprepared, you can hire deck chairs and sunbeds in Bournemouth. The best way to reach the beach is from the cliff top. Either meander down the zig-zag paths or descend in style aboard one of the Victorian Cliff Lifts. Once down onto the beach, explore one of the longest beaches in the UK, and keep an eye out for the smugglers caves nestled in the rocks.
Spend an afternoon in Bournemouth Gardens – Gervis Place, Bournemouth, Dorset, BH1 2AQ
If you fancy a bit of greenery after all that sea air, head to Bournemouth Gardens. This is more than just a park. The garden is protected by the English Register of Parks and Gardens which helps it retain its original character. There are plenty of activities, including mini golf, a tennis court and an aviary. If you are lucky you may also catch one of the free concerts in the bandstand. Relax to the music while enjoying an ice cream!
Pay homage to a literary master at Hardy’s Cottage – Higher Bockhampton, Dorchester, Dorset, DT2 8QJ
For literature lovers, the next stop is an essential part of your Bournemouth itinerary. Yes, it is situated a little further away from Bournemouth (45 minutes) but the beautiful thatched cottage where Thomas Hardy was born is well worth the trip. Hardy wrote ‘Under the Greenwood Tree’ while living there, and the cottage and gardens are an excellent example of quintessential cottage life.

Throughout the year, The Lighthouse, The BIC, Pavillion and O2 Academy show a wide variety or music, comedy and plays suitable for all tastes.
