Krün is a municipality in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria. Along with the neighbouring resorts of Mittenwald and Wallgau, Krün forms part of the Alpenwelt Karwendel. Here you can take part in all manner of winter sports from ski touring to snowshoeing at the family ski resort of Kranzberg. Krün itself is beautiful village, and with its backdrop of fields, lakes and mountains, it is a true nature-lovers paradise. There are endless trails to explore on foot, by bike or on skis. For the less sporty, there is a chance to learn about the geology and fossils of the local area at the House of Stones. Alternatively, Krün makes a beautiful base from, which to explore the larger cities of Innsbruck and Munich. This village of 1950 inhabitants, in the Upper Isar Valley in Bavaria, is situated in an idyllic location between meadows and mountains. Krün lies on the old trade route between Munich and the Inn valley and is very close to the Austrian border, and less than 50 kilometres from Innsbruck. It is only 17 kilometres from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, host to the 1936 Winter Olympics, and one of the best places to ski and snowboard in Germany. With an hour and a half's transfer time to Munich airport, and even less to Innsbruck, Krün is easily accessible.
Krün is a typical Bavarian village, proud to uphold long standing traditions. Depending on the time of year you visit, you can take part in the Mardi Gras carnival celebrations, see the raising of the maypole, watch the annual cattle round up with its farmers markets or sample a mulled wine at the Christmas market. Not to be missed is also the beautiful Maria Rast Baroque church with its impressive onion tower.
Krün is a natural starting point for hikers, cyclists, and cross-country skiers. For families there is the raft playground, the Isar nature experience trail, or Grubsee with its big slides. In the winter, there are cross-country skiing trails, a natural ice-rink and miles of hiking trails to explore. Not only that, but Krün is very close to the family ski resort Kranzberg, as well as the much larger resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, as well as Germany's highest mountain, the Zugspitze.
