Katowice: Poland’s Fiery Phoenix
The beguiling city of Katowice is a city that many European travellers have a tendency to overlook in favour of more famous metropolises such as Warsaw and Krakow. A visit to this static and scenic city will show travellers how wrong they are after Katowice showcases its innovative architecture, bristling bars and compelling artistic scene. Home to Poland’s largest cathedral and a culturally climatic selection of museums, Katowice is a captivating city that has risen like a phoenix from post-industrial inertia and is now ready to surprise and seduce the intrepid traveller.
An Architectural Record
Poland’s largest cathedral boasts an austere and authoritative neo-classical façade that reveals nothing of the visual treasures within. The Christ the King Cathedral houses a glittering array of religious relics sure to impress even the most experienced European traveller; consecrated chapels are secreted on either side of the impressive nave, the most notable of which is St. Barbara’s Chapel due to its coal covered monument to lost miners.
A Cultural Odyssey
Hailed as one of Poland’s most magnificent museums, the creatively curated collections of the Katowice Historical Museum are testament to its critical acclaim. Exhibitions speak eloquently and objectively of the city’s prosperous past and colourful history, presenting everything from residential replicas of the upper classes to a sacred selection of religious art.
Deliciously Decadent Dining
Occupying a prime position near to the city’s atmospheric main square is the gorgeously gaudy Krysztatowa Restaurant; the richly decorated interior is a veritable museum of kitsch and colourful artefacts that add to the delightful decadent atmosphere. Feast upon rich dishes such as stuffed duck while sipping champagne and echoing your exquisitely extravagant surroundings. (ul. Warszawska 5, Katowice, Poland)
