It is undisputed that the Greek Islands are some of the most beautiful out there, Santorini certainly doesn’t disappoint its visitors.
With its traditional blue and white buildings perched atop the rocky hills in the middle of the sparkling blue Mediterranean Sea, Santorini has been a romantic destination for years.
This island is one of the few in the area that actually has an airport, making travel easy for visitors who are looking to spend time there. The Santorini National Airport brings in visitors as well as the many ferry boats from nearby islands and mainland Greece.
Santorini is an island that is truly an outdoor lovers paradise. There are a number of beaches, boat rides and hikes that are available all over the island that visitors love to partake in. Some of the most popular outdoor hot spots are Skaros Rock, a unique geologic formation, the Santorini Volcano including Nea Kameni, and the Amoudi Bay.
There are a number of fantastic beaches located on the island as well that are well worth a visit to spend a day or two relaxing on vacation. Some favorites include Perissa Beach, Eros Beach and Red Beach. Each beach on the island offers something a bit different, from new views, to waves, to incredible sunsets. Note that most beaches on Santorini will have more rocks than sand.
One of the very best ways to see the island of Santorini is to wander it. Consider using the buses available or rent a car and drive around the island to view some of the little villages that dot some of the cliffs. Also, if feeling a little bit more adventurous, try renting a bicycle and exploring the countryside on two wheels.
Some of the best villages to check out include Oia, which is known for having some of the most spectacular sunsets in the world. Another great city to check out is Pyrgos which at the highest point on the island, offers incredible views. And, Akrotiri, which features some very well preserved ruins and is well worth a visit to learn the history of Santorini first hand.
