The municipality of Rust is situated in the Ortenaukreis and it belongs to the federal state of Baden-Württemberg. Rust is located to the North of Freiburg and to the South of Offenburg. France lies to the West of the municipality. Above all, Rust is well-known for the theme park „Europa-Park“, which is located here. However, the history of the municipality stretches very far back to the year 762. The Europa- Park is Germany ́s largest theme park and it is seasonally the largest in the world.
Given that Rust is located in the border triangle Germany-France and Switzerland, the municipality can be easily reached from all directions. If you arrive by plane, the airport in Karlsruhe, which is located around 60 km away, is the nearest in Germany. Even shorter is the journey from the Black Forest airport of Lahr, which, however, only has a special permit for flight traffic and it is only allowed to dispatch aircraft from London, Manchester and Vienna four times a week. By car you take the A 5 exit to Rust.
Besides the village of Rust, no other districts belong to the municipality. Despite the continuallygrowing levels of tourism, Rust strives to retain its village character. Those who live in Rust, are confronted with growing numbers of people who come for an overnight stay and who at first need to find a place to stay. In spite of the many new builds for the guests, Rust is still a place that has been left to its natural state. The conservation area of Taubergießen represents this initiative.
The Europa-Park is without doubt the goal for travelling to Rust for the majority of people. Since the park opened in 1984/1985 and more attractions were added, the number of tourists rose dramatically. The park has over 100 amusement rides which are dividing up depending on the themed areas, countries. Furthermore, many shows are offered which are appealing for both children and adults alike. Since the park has also been opening during the winter months, the number of visitors has grown ever more. There are various events taking place during the winter months such as Halloween, the Miss Germany selection etc. The park is then also extended to comprise an ice rink and a Ferris wheel, a Christmas market tops off the range of activities.
The amusement park is located in the park grounds of the Schlosses Balthasar. It dates from the year 1442 and it belonged to the noble family of the Straßburger. Today, the building is under a preservation order so it had to be integrated into the amusement park. After some to and fro with the owners, it was possible to implement this. The castle is supposed to have once also been a moated castle but the moat is no longer there today. Today, the castle has three floors with a very rare half-hip roof.
If you have a bit of free time, you should go and visit the Naturzentrum Rheinauen in Rust. It is an education and knowledge centre for those who are interested in nature and it is for all ages. So you can bring your children here and they can learn something on the theme of the environment. The climate change garden is very popular amongst children. Here, children should be introduced to the theme of climate change and this will be brought closer to them in a playful and exploratory manner. Another trip that you can do into the heart of nature, is to the Naturschutzgebiet Taubergießen. With 1682 hectors, it is one of the largest conservation areas in the federal state. Above all, the conservation area is a habitat for water birds because it is traversed by various waterways. You can experience nature with the signposted paths.
If you pay a visit to the Europa-Park, you can also get a decent meal here. A good aspect is that there are a lot of themed areas for the gastronomic establishments in which you will be offered something that is traditional depending on the country or rather the theme. The Seerestaurant is very popular time and again. It is located in the theme of Austria and thus you can try the regional delicacies such as Kaiserschmarrn or the Wiener Schnitzel.
In the town, you should visit the Ochsen. You will be offered good, simple food here. It is a good idea to ring up and make a reservation because it is often very full on an evening and you may have to wait a long time for a table without a reservation. A plate full of food and good-value for money are what you can expect in this rustic restaurant.
