The hotel is beautiful, and has been beautifully restored and updated in a very stylish nod to contemporary design.

The room was quite small. Specifically, there were some design challenges: first, the shower sprayed mist into the bed since there is no ceiling on the shower stall (and the bed is backed up to the shower). Second, the air conditioning unit dripped - which not only brought water into the room, but caused a dripping sound right next to the bed that was so loud and disturbing we had to turn off the air conditioning in order to sleep. But the biggest issue was that the fire alarm went off at 3 am, and was so loud it was impossible to stay in the building. Nothing wrong with that -it should be loud, in order to wake up the residents and cause evacuations. However, when we emerged from our rooms, it was apparent that one poor middle-aged lady was the only person on duty, and she was nearly having an heart attack trying to figure out how to deal with the alarm, which apparently was the result of crossed wiring and not due to a fire. She was running between the main building and our building, up and down stairs, and I honestly thought she was going to have a heart attack. She could not get the alarm off for 30 minutes. Then, she had to turn off all the electricity to do so. For the rest of the night, she (or someone helping her) were trying to get the electricity back to normal working order. Each time they started the electricity, there were any number of sounds and noises from all the equipment starting up again (TV's, air conditioners, telephones), that it was next to impossible to fall asleep. When I mentioned the incident the next morning to the concierge, there was no apology or offer to try to make up for the inconvenience and lack of sleep // we were still billed at full rate for the evening, for our two breakfasts, and for parking. I would have expected both a verbal apology and some form of expression of goodwill, and frankly, I was shocked that it was not forthcoming. Because it was clear that the hotel staff was aware of the issue - as we were having breakfast, the electrician arrived to diagnose the issue and propose a resolution. Disappointing, because the hotel really was quite wonderful. We just wish the service had been attentive and concerned enough to merit only praise for the hotel.
