The municipality of Büsum is located in Schleswig-Holstein. It belongs to the district of Dithmarschen. Büsum is a harbour town, situated directly on the North Sea. Since the year 1837, Büsum has been a beach resort and since 1949, it has also been a health spa. This alone makes Büsum so important for tourism. Büsum has the third largest number of overnight stays in the whole of Schleswig Holstein. However, fishing is an equally important source of income for its inhabitants. Despite the high level of tourism, in many cases Büsum is a fishing village with its own charm. The Wadden Sea in Büsum has constituted part of the UNESCO World-Heritage Site since the year 2009.

Journey to Büsum

If you would like to travel to Büsum by car, you can take the A 23 and join the B 203 until you reach it.

The nearest airport is in Hamburg. It is located around 100 km away. Büsum was one of the first North Sea destinations that had its own railway station. For journeys by train, you should select the railway station in Hamburg as your long-distance railway station. From here trains run every hour via Heide to Büsum.

Tourist Attractions in Büsum

Alongside the North Sea, with its dunes and the other maritime attractions, there are other things to discover in Büsum. It starts in the pedestrian zone with the old town centre. The town hall is located in a central position. It was built between 1914 and 1915 and it is a listed building. The neobaroque building is two-storied and furnished with red tiles. The front side of the building is adorned with a colossal middle gable. The year dates of the building are embedded and between them there is a Relief of Pope Clement I who is seen as the patron saint of the parish in Büsum. Alongside the St. –Clemens-Kirche there is another tourist attraction in Büsum with the old town hall. It is also called Fischerkirche because it was dedicated to the patron saint of sailors, fishermen and coastal inhabitants. The building dates back to 1442 as the first church in 1362 was destroyed. The inhabitants themselves built the church on a dwelling mound, the building was not optimal and the church had to be renovated several times to prevent it from collapsing. The clock tower is freestanding and adorned with three clocks. The inner-room of the church has been furnished over several epochs. The baptism font originates from the 13th Century and the windows date from the 20th Century.

In the museum am meer you will learn about fishing and tourism in Büsum. The museum opened in September 2001 at the fishing harbour 19. The main theme in the museum is the everyday life of a crab fisher and the processing of crabs. You can take a look at a crab sieving plant, take a rest on the jetty and watch films about fishing in a wheelhouse. In the course of this, you will also find out a few things about the dangers that confronted the fishermen on a daily basis. In the second room you can learn something about the history of Büsum. You will look at text plates and illustrations to see what has happened in Büsum since 1837 and how the place has changed for and due to tourism. In the outside area there is a genuine fishing boat.

The Deichmuseum von Büsum „Büsum Dyke Museum“ is an open-air museum in which you can learn something about the development of the dyke. There are three recreated dykes at the museum which date back from the 12th, 16th and 18th Centuries. You will soon be able to decipher how they differ.

In the Aquarium Büsumer Meereswelten you can discover the world underwater. The exhibition comprises 34 display tanks in which there are 60,000 litres of fresh and sea water and in which 130 different species of animals reside. The museum is suitable for adults and children alike because the children also get a unique insight into the underwater world. The diversity of animals could not be larger. There are not only indigenous animals in the aquariums from the North Sea such as codfish, plaice and lobster. The animal world is topped off with animals that live in the mild and tropical latitudes such as the shark, turtles, crocodiles and seahorses.

Restaurants in Büsum

Where there are so many tourists, there must also be a lot of restaurants. You can eat nice fish in Büsum and on the beach promenade you will find various possibilities to do so. However, the restaurants are mostly small establishments. A rather different fish restaurant is the Büsumer Barkasse. It is one of the best restaurants on the West coast which is always mentioned in the papers. However, it is not only the furnishing but also the food that is unique. All varieties of fresh fish are on offer here. You should try the Büsumer crabs which are also well-known far beyond the boundaries of town. The range of schnitzel and rump steak also round off the diversity of food.

You can eat well in the restaurant Zur alten Schlosserei. The restaurant seems a bit rustic but you will like it here. The ambience is rustic, the cuisine is simple with meat and fish dishes. Especially in the peak season and if the weather is good, the restaurant and the beer garden are full.
