An hotel that states on its home page that it offers special rates for teachers deserves special attention, it invites further enquiry, even though one may not teach anything. Santa Coloma del Camino is a charming hotel on the Burgos stretch of St. James’ Way and that again calls your attention. However, and without wishing to disparage the Way in the slightest, once we were at the hotel we decided to stay, take a walk to the castle, visit one or two hermitages, and take a stroll among fields that suggest the presence of bustards, both little and large. A hectare of wooded land surrounds the property and there’s a divine pool that is the centre of attention when the Castilian summer is at its height. Inside, light dominates the eclectic classique-nouveau decorated space, dominated on the ground floor by the main room and its rose-coloured marble chimney, at which pilgrims and profane travellers leisurely read by the wood fire. In the bathrooms the mosaics and Macael marble are white while the tiled floors are multi-coloured. From the windows the prospect is like something described by Delibes, a plateau inhabited by small game with villages, dominated by their churches, dotted across it.
