By Car. If you are arriving from the Tyrrhenian coast, take the Salerno to Reggio Calabria motorway and follow the signs for Potenza. From here take the SS 407 to Metaponto and then to Ferrandina where you follow the signs for Matera. From the Adriatic coast, follow the Bologna to Taranto motorway to Bari Nord. Exit to though the “zona industriale” and take the Altermura-Matera road SS96 and then the SS99. From Calabria take the Reggio Calabria to Salerno motorway and exit at Sibari. From here you follow the SS106 Jonica to Taranto road, and come off at Metaponto taking the Matera exit.

By aeroplane. The nearest airport is Bari Palese, around 60km from Matera. The airport in Bari has internal flights from Milan, Rome, Verona, Turin, Venice and Bologna. The Marino bus runs from Matera to Milan, Bologna, Naples, Novara, Parma, Reggio Emilia, and Urbino. It also runs to cities outside Italy. The Marozzi and Liscio service connects Matera to Rome, Florence, Pisa and Siena with two daily trips and one night coach. The route from Rome takes 7 hours.
