The name 'het Wapen van Leiden' goes back to those days when stage coaches were still frequenting the route between the City of Leiden and the Baltic States. This route passed through various Hanseatic towns and served to sell cloth manufactured in Leiden. However, passengers were transported along with the goods. This necessitated locations for unharnessing the horses where the cloth could be sold and passengers could spend the night. Tradition has it that there were several such unharnessing locations named 'het Wapen van Leiden' along this route.
The town Appingedam which is more than 1000 years old, boasts various impressive monuments, such as the Nicolai Church dating back to 1225 and the Old City Hall from the year 1630. The museum 'Stadt Appingedam' as well as the famous 'hanging kitchens' above the Damsterdiep are certainly worth seeing.
In the vicinity of Appingedam you will also encounter lovely churches in attractive villages, built on artificial mounds (terps). At a distance of 5 km from Appingedam there is the 'Schildmeer' lake, offering oppertunities for various types of aquatic sports.
