Whoever thinks of Emden and still does not know the town, will initially have to grin. The largest town in East Frisia is well-known as the home town of the comedians Otto Waalkes and Karl Dall- here is the home of the proverbial East Frisian jokes. And in actual fact, the town sparkles with a carefree maritime atmosphere owing to its 150 canals and the historical seaport.
No matter whether you travel by car or by train, regarding transport connections, Emden is easy to reach. The town is situated directly on the A 31 and it is connected to the Deutsche Bahn InterCity route networks. From the nearest located airport which is Bremen Airport, the car journey takes 1.5 hours and by train you should factor in a journey time of about more than 2 hours.
The Emder Rathaus „Emder Town Hall“, is considered to be the landmark of the town and today it houses the Ostfriesische Landesmuseum. It was, as with the rest of the old town, completely destroyed during the war.
If you want to gain an insight into the original urban landscape in Emden, a stroll through the district of Klein-Faldern is recommended, in which many houses still date back to the 19th Century.
An even better way to explore the town is on the water. You can either do that with the now almost obligatory cruise through Emden harbour or with a romantic boat tour through the picturesque canals and dykes in the town.
Emden proudly describes Otto Waalkes as the "the greatest son of this town" and it has even dedicated a house to him, "Dat Otto Huus". Here you can actually marvel at the school that Otto is said to have once attended and you can pay tribute to the life of the famous Emden in an antiquely furnished cinema.
The Kunsthalle in Emden „Art Gallery in Emden“ enjoys international fame. It is the gift from another famous son of the town. It was donated in 1986 by the editor of Stern, Henri Nannen. The collection in the museum comprises 1500 exhibits- from expressionism in the early 20th Century to contemporary art.
Those who are seeking typical East Frisian specialties in Emden, need not look any further. The Emder Feuschiff-Restaurant offers East Frisian inspired cuisine in a maritime atmosphere for fair prices. Here the food comes directly out of the galley.
