The Postcard Perfection of Desenzano del Garda

With its picturesque harbour and luscious lakeshore location, the small town of Desenzano is a postcard picture of provincial perfection. Although relatively flat compared to Lake Garda’s other urban inhabitants, scenic vistas of the stunning surroundings can be enjoyed from one of Desenzano’s many vantage points. A commanding castle reigns over the town from its hilltop roost, adding an ancient air of mystery to the pretty place; a tangle of winding streets and cobbled squares characterise the Old Town while traditional fishing boats haul in the day’s catch at the harbour.

Venerated Villas

Absorb Desenzano’s intriguing past with a visit to some of its alluring attractions; ascend the labyrinthine lane of Via Castello for panoramic vistas and a visit to the town’s captivating Castello; the courtyard intermittently admits visitors and its stone walls truly evoke a rich history.

Another notable sight are the crumbling ruins of Desenzano’s remarkable Roman Villa; upon this archaeological site, original mosaics have been painstakingly preserved amongst the remaining relics. A small museum elaborates on this structure’s interesting story.

Buried treasure

Transport yourself back to the pre-historic past with a visit to the alluring Archaeological Museum; the region’s interesting geographical and cultural inheritance means archaeologists have enjoyed some fascinating finds over the past century. The enthralling exhibits feature Bronze Age and prehistoric artefacts that depict the daily life of former inhabitants.

Perfect Pizza

Enjoy one of Italy’s most exquisite exports, the authentic way, at one of the town’s most traditional and tempting pizzerias. Exposed brickwork and classic art pieces create an antique atmosphere within this atmospheric eatery, which comes highly recommended by locals and visitors alike. Pizzas stray from the traditional thin crust versions in favour of thicker, more filling bases smothered in seasonal toppings locally sourced from bounteous surroundings.(Via Ca’Vecchie, 13B, 25015 San Martino della Battaglia, Desenzano Del Garda)
