Amidst lush, low rolling mountain ranges and interminable woodlands, glacial lakes sparkle and crystal clear streams meander. The sound of a woodpecker working on an enormous tree echoes and luminous white snow glistens on the summit of an imposing mountain. This is the Bavarian Forest, a place in which nature is left to its own devices in order to flourish and frolic. In Europe’s first national park, visitors can explore and enjoy the 243 square kilometers of unspoilt woodland on foot, with a bicycle or by soaring down snow covered slopes on skis.
Returning to Nature
Within the National Park, experience trails are offered to allow visitors to become familiar with the enchanting eco systems and intriguing processes which occur within the woodlands. Open your senses to the sounds of the gently flowing brooks, to the smell of moldering mushrooms, to the sight of soaring ravens and to the feel of leaves crunching beneath your feet. Paths such as the Nature Experience Path and the Watzlik Hain path lead hikers through wonderful wilderness in order to observe the flora and fauna flourishing in the forest.
During the winter, the Bavarian Forest is covered in a heavy blanket of crisp, white snow, making it the ideal place to enjoy exhilarating winter sports. Cross country skiing tracks reside on the forest borders, allowing visitors to soar and slalom through the winter wilderness for over 80km. Those seeking exhilaration without exertion can opt to sled down one of the steep mountain sides, or to explore the surrounding areas in snow shoes for a unique variation of the usual hike.
Amidst the enchanting woodlands reside some interesting cultural centres and gastronomical delights; the fascinating Forest History Museum tells the story of the ever changing landscape since the Ice Age, while also explaining the effect cultural history has had on the environment. Cosy and charismatic eateries season the park like pepper, so whether you’re at the summit of a snowy peak or beside a glittering glacial lake, you’ll be able to enjoy local specialties and gourmet gastronomy.
