The city is dominated by the Puy de Dôme, a high and extinct volcano of the Massif Central hills. The Notre-Dame-de-l´Assomption Cathedral, in gothic style, was entirely built of dark and cavernous lava stone from Volvic and is the only cathedral built from this material. Strolling through the picturesque, narrow alleys in the cathedral quarter, you will find many houses built from the same black lava stone.
