SAN GIOVANNI LA PUNTA: It is a small town of the Sicilian hill, with a strategic location. It is the only way to the Etna *Earth*. If on one side it seems like on a postcard to be on a terrace over the city of Catania, on the other it opens towards that area of small towns that is dominated by the grandeur of the volcano. The constructions are built on lava from the eruption of 1444, that flowed from Monte Peloso to the northeast of Nicolosi that stopped at Aci Bonaccorsi. The Hotel is located 12 km from Catania. Scored by the wild and overwhelming fascination of Etna, the largest volcano in Europe - the still active forge of the gods, with its brown expanses of lava, its barren footpaths cut out of the ash, where the pungent scent of gorse reigns supreme - nowadays the site of one of the most famous and modern tourist resorts on the island, the Province of Catania presents the visitor enthralling and mysterious nature, tinted by the ardent hues of fire, the purplish blue waters of the Ionian Sea, along the legendary and unspoiled Riviera of the Cyclops, and the deep green of the most extensive Sicilian plain. Studded with superbly beautiful centers - including the exuberant Catania, the elephant city, that counterbalances the ancient charm of the Roman Amphitheatre and the Ursino Castle with the extreme modernity of the efficient industrial estate, unusual Caltagirone, capital of ceramics, Acireale, pearl of the Baroque, medieval Randazzo, Acitrezza, Vizzini, all recalling Verga, disseminated with magnificent Norman and Swabian Castles, with a wealth of museums and art galleries, the Province of Catania is one of the most enchanting corners of Sicily, distinguished by deeply rooted cultural and folkloristic traditions. For example the Acireale Carnival, the most engaging on the island - refined craft work such as wood carving, thriving agriculture, thanks to the rich volcanic earth, and finally, lively commercial activity, encouraged by the port and Airport of Catania and the numerous approaches along the coastal strip. Absolutely inimitable, finally, the gastronomy, offering pistachio and hazelnut sweets, prickly pear jam, superb quality tuma and rice croquettes, as well as the famous blood oranges and the fine wines of the Bosco etneo. The Hotel is located 50 km from Taormina. Against the imposing background of Mt. Etna, on the ancient bay of Naxos lies the most spectacular and enchanting town of the Province of Messina: Taormina, pearl of Sicily and favorite destination of international tourism. Hugging the walls of its ancient Greek theatre, its most famous monument, the town, its magnificent site - a vast terrace on a crag plunging down to the sea - has been inhabited since most ancient times, probably it was founded in 403 BC by exiles from nearby Naxos, - the oldest of the Greek colonies in Sicily, founded in 734 BC by the Chalcidians of Eubea -, and called Tauromenion from the name of the mount that overlooks it. Dominated by the Romans, an episcopacy in Byzantine times, strengthened by the Arabs, enlarged and transformed finally by the Normans, Aragonese and Bourbons, Taormina still preserves evidence of its illustrious past including the unforgettable historic center, its air perennially charged with the intense scent of jasmine, the massive feudal palaces, the towers with battlements, the ancient monasteries and churches. The fortunate combination of extremely differing architectural elements, the continuous change of shapes and styles, create the fascinating attraction of a place that has charmed visitors from all over the world for centuries, and that in paintings, drawings, engravings and studies has always been represented as an earthly Eden. |
