In and around Thuringian Basin

The Thuringian Basin stretches over a distance of 60 kilometers in the north west of Thuringia. There are very many comfotable hotels in all categories throughout the region. Erfurt is the main city and whilst there the cathedral has to be visited. In the cathedral there is an impressive candle stick with a wonderful figure moulded into it which dates from the 12th Century. Another sacred building in Erfurt is the Augustinian Monastery which was the most important and influential of all such foundations during the time of Martin Luther. Another interesting visit in Erfurt is the Natural History Museum where the visitor will experience a fascinating journey through the origins and history of Thuringia.

Should you stay in a hotel in Mühlhausen you should visit the parish church of Divi Blasii which has one of the most famous Bach organs. A pleasant walk can be made around the old defensive works of the town and there is a very interesting museum dealing with the Peasants‘ Revolt. The castle of Friedrichstein towers over the town of Gotha and in the castle church the visitor to the Thuringia Basin can admire the coffins of the ruling family of Thuringia. The castle museum has a large collection of medieval art and artefacts of which the most famous is the „Gotha Lovers“ from 1480. Bad Langensalza also has many hotels as a spa town and many protected buildings. If you stay in the Thurigian Basin then it is worth taking the time to visit the 912 meter high Großer Inselsberg which offers a wonderful view over the surrounding area and its hotels. The Thuringian Basin is easily reached along the Autobahn A4.
