Marseilles is the oldest town in France and the imposing street of Canebiére starts at the old harbour. To the north of the old harbour the narrow streets climb up steeply away from the sea. The Musée du Vieux is concerned with the history of Marseilles whilst high above the city is the cathedral of la Major which is built of marble with many interesting mosaic inlays. Offshore is the island of Chateau d’If immortalised in the novel of Dumas which can be reached by boat from the harbour in Marseilles.
Nice is a busy city with the oldest part clustered around the castle hill from whence there is a wonderful view over the city, the harbour and along the coast.. The famous daily flower market takes place in the Cours Saleya and is a vibrant and almost overwhelming splash of colour. The suburb of Cimiez is built on the foundations of a Roman settlement. The famous artist Marc Chagcall is commemorated in the Musée National Message Biblique which has many examples of his varied work. Nice is the main port for ferries to Corsica and is now visited by many cruise ships.
Toulon has the imposing cathedral of Ste-Marie-Majeure and the Musée du Vieux Toulon with many exhibits on local life and history. Toulon is also one of the main French naval bases which can be seen from the top of Mont Faron which is reached by cable car.
