Morzine is the chief town and in 1966 the wintersports‘ mecca Avoriaz was opened which is part of Morzine. Whilst sking the many runs the skier has wonderful views to Mont Blanc and Lake Geneva. Chatel is so popular that it is almost always booked out which is not surprising as it has an historic village centre with countless pretty traditional chalets. The village church in St-Laurent is a typical village church of the region whilst in the church of Montriond there is a statue of Mary dating from ther 14th Century. The history of skiing and its current economic importance can be learnt about in the museum in La Chapelle-d`Aboudance. The ski area of Portes du Soleil can be reached along the motorways A 9, Lausanne-Vevey, or A 12, Bern-Vevey. The nearest airport is in Geneva.
