Halle is the largest city in the German State of Saxony-Anhalt. It is also called Halle an der Saale (literally Halle on the Saale river, and in some historic references simply Saale after the river) in order to distinguish it from Halle in North Rhine-Westphalia. Currently the city is officially called Halle (Saale).
In Halle (Saale) you will find numerous service enterprises and technology centres, the city being situated in Middle Germany’s industrial region. The town can easily be reached by plane, arriving at the airport Leipzig-Halle, by ICE train, the highway crossing of A9/A14 and several more federal highways.
The city is connected to the airport by the “FlughafenExpress”, a train by the Deutsche Bahn, which traverses every half hour. Means of public transportation are trams, city busses and suburban trains.
You may relax within the city in a 71 m²/ 2,507 feet² public green space, at the mountain zoo or by walking along the banks of the river Saale. The distinctive silhouette of the historic city is characterised by five towers.
The Händel monument on the market square reminds you of this renowned composer who was born in Halle (Saale). Further sights are the castle Giebichenstein, the castle Moritzburg, the Stadtgottesacker (cemetery, renaissance), the ensemble of cathedrals, the university court with the classical main building of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, the Technical Halloren and Saline Museum, which testifies to the 1,000-year-old history of salt production, as well as the Frankesche institutions that have been founded by the educationalist August Hermann Francke.
Once a year you may enjoy the Händel festival, the children’s choir festival, lantern festival and the salt festival.
