The main islands are Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre separated from one another by a narrow arm of the sea. Basse-Terre is very mountainous and of volcanic origin. Surrounding the main town of the same name are tropical forests and in the National Park there are many hot springs and powerful waterfalls.
The limestone island of Grande-Terre is surrounded by coral reefs which offer wonderful diving expeditions. Most of the hotels are to be found in the colourful main town of Pointe-à-Pitre which is a port of call for the many cruise ships that offer one week cruises through the Carribean. The airport in Pointe-à-Pitre has a daily service from Paris.
Marie-Galante has wonderful sandy beaches where the tourist feels in paradise whereas inland there are very many windmills which used to be used to press the sugar cane. The island of La Désirade has leper colony which was in operation until the middle of the 20th Century and which can now be visited. Guadaloupe offers so many possibilities for activities such as swimming from the many beaches, golf and tennis. The underwater reserve “Jaques Cousteau” is a mecca for scuba divers.
