Freiburg was founded in 1120 by the Duke Konrad of Zähringen and now has become place of a University and archbishopric. Freiburg’s historic city is definitely worth seeing. It is traversed by an open network of canals. There is no other town where you still can have such a good look at this network.
We also recommend you to visit the market and the Münsterplatz market place and the Minster (Münster), which has been built in Roman and Gothic style. It contains a special treasure, the main altar built by Hans Baldung Grien.
Already in the time of the renaissance Freiburg used to by an important trading place, which is demonstrated by a large store built in the 16th century. The former merchants used it for conferences, gatherings and festivals. The historic city can be reached within a few minutes from your hotel.
The University and the adjacent University Clinical Centre are the town’s most relevant employers. Due to the southerly climate, also companies of the solar energy sector have settled down in the city.
At the small Freiburg fair INTERSOLAR, an important international fair, takes place every year. There are nice hotels for business travellers close to the fairground.
Freiburg im Breisgau is also home to the central offices of the publishers Herder and Haufe.
