The Hochlandsteiges (Highland Path) leads you to Altdorf with its market place surrounded by the impressive houses of former merchants. The Wallenstein-Festival which takes place every three years in Hof draws visitors from far and near with many plays and concerts on offer. Sulzbach-Rosenberg was long one of the major centres for the manufacture of porcelain and iron and steel. Nowadays you should visit the pilgrimage church of Mariä Himmelfahrt which has a priceless painting by Hans Georg Asams. The imposing castle above the town was constructed by the Duke Ottheinrich in the 16th Century.
Many tourists make the effort to visit Kelheim and the Befreiungshalle (Freedom Hall) high above the town. This massive circular building commemorates the successful battles against Naopleon and contains more than life size marble statues of great value. One of the most popular destinations is the monastery of Weltenburg which is home to one of the oldest breweries in the world.
