In and around Department Seine-Saint-Denis

The Département Seine-Saint-Denis is in the Region Île-de-France and includes many of the most densely populated suburbs of Paris. The traveller to St. Denis should visit the cathedral which was completed in the 8th Century and which is the first large gothic building in France to be fully finished. Inside are the graves of Louis XII and Anna of Brittany. For relaxation a visit to the nearby Parc Astérix will take you into the world of this comic strip character which includes a Roman town and a dolphinarium.

The wonderfully imposing castle of Ecouen contains priceless objects from the renaissance period. La Raincy has the first ever concrete church, Notre-Dame-du-Raincy, constructed in France in 1923. The castle of Ladoucette in Drancy contains a memorial to the French Jews who were driven out and deported.

Montfermeil has the 13th Century church of St-Pierre-St-Paul whilst the house of the historian Frantz Funck-Brentano is a fine example of empire style architecture. There is also a replica of an 18th Century windmill here. The porcelain town of Sèvres is home to the Musée National de Céramique which has many delicate examples of the ceramiscist’s art. The region can be reached along the all the motorways that led to the Paris area.
