In and around Department Gironde

The Département Gironde is situated in the south west of France in the Region Aquitaine. The large port city of Bordeaux and the old wine warehouses along the wharves has many sights to interest the visitor – the central point of Bordeaux is Grand Théâtre on the Place de la Comédie. This theatre is considered to be amongst the most beautiful in France. The ancient sacophagus and the altar wall, both from the 6th Century, in the church of St-Seurin are universally admired. In the Jardin de la Mairie the Fine Arts Museum is to be found which has paintings produced over 600 years. The area is well known for its wine and pleasant rambles can be taken through the vineyards which surround the Castle of Cadillac with its unusual fireplaces.

Vineyards everywhere colour and influence the landscape and for wine lovers the Château Haut-Brion is already well known. Lover of oysters can visit the oyster beds at Archachon and enjoy a sample or two in the many waterside restaurants. To the south of this interesting bay are the highest sand dunes in Europe. Steps lead to the top 115 meters over the surrounding countryside. Of course, it is also possible to make the strenuous climb up through the sand to the top from whence there is a wide view along the coast and the countryside of the Landes. Martaliv et-les-Bains offers a huge sandy beach and the Atlantic rollers encourage all kinds of watersports. The airport in Bordeaux is well served with flights from all over Europe.
