In and around Ardennes department

The Département Ardennes is in the north east of France in the Region Champagne-Ardenne. The main town of the Département is Charleville-Mézières and the Place Ducale forms the central point of the town. The brightly coloured windows of René Dürrbach are greatly admired in the Basilika. The International Marionette Festival that takes place every three years brings many additional visitors to the town. Sedan is a historical, fortified town, with its Town Church and the memorial to the local born Marshall Turenne. The soldiers‘ cemetery of Noyers-Pont-Maugis gives the visitor a chance to reflect upon the sacrifices of two the World Wars.

In Vouziers, a visit to the church of Saint-Maurille is worthwhile as here is the grave of the aviator Roland Garros who was shot down in 1918. Revin, close to the Belgian frontier, with its multitude of half-timbered houses is impressive, as are the surrounding forests which offer many recreational possibilities. The Maison Espagnol is now a museum. Mouzon is situated astride an old Roman road which crosses the Meuse. The old Benedictine Convent and the gothic Abbey church still stand, with special attention being paid to the organ of Christophe Moucherel built in the 17th Century. The Bourgogne Gate is one of the finest parts of the fortifications. In the Département Ardennes mining, the iron industry and winemaking are the most significant economic activities.
