Book a hotel in the French Alps and you will find the most spectactular alpine passes and the highest mountains in Europe. Grenoble is the touristic centre of the French Alps and the vibrant city was the location of the Winter Olympics in 1968. Nowadays Grenoble is a centre of hi-tech and has a famous university. In the city the Bastille Fort offers a wonderful view over the town and the Stendhal Museum brings you closer to Grenoble‘s most famous son. In the Museum of Painting and Sculpture you can visit one of the most significant collection of paintings in France. Not far away in the mountains is the Carthusian Monastery, La Grande Chartreuse, famous for its liqueur distillery , and very well worth a visit.
Chambéry was the seat of the Dukes of Savoy in the 13th Century and there is a Museum of Savoy in the Bishop’s Palace. You cannot fail to notice the original Elefant Fountain when strolling through the town. A trip to the country house of Les Charmettes in which Jean-Jacques Rousseau lived in the middle of the 18th Century is much to be recommended as another excursion though the surrounding countryside.
Chamonix with its numerous hotels is situated at the foot of Mont Blanc. Apart from the attractions of the town itself then no opportunity should be missed to take an excursion into the surrounding mountains. A railway ascends to Montenvers from whence there is a spectacular view over the Mer de Glace, an ice river formed by three glaciers. Val d’Isère is a very popular destiantion with skiers where the ski area „Espace Killy“ guarantees skiing enjoyment all year round.
