| Indre is a Département in central France in the Region Centre. The overall impression of Châteauroux is dominated by the 15th Century castle and much about the Napoleonic era is illustrated in the Musée Bertrand in the old town hall. In the Park Balsan there is an interesting arts museum and to gain an insight into religious life of the 13th Century the convent of the cordeliers should be visited.
Issoudon has a good museum housed in the 12th Century St-Roch Hospiz which was a convent as far back as the 12th Century. The most interesting exhibit is the reconstruction of a ward for sick people as it would have been in the 15th Century. Many people like to visit the convent church of Neuvy-St-Sépulchre which was built as a station on the St. James‘ Way in the 11th Century. The floor plan of the church was copied from that of the Holy Selpulchre church in Jerusalem.
The castle of Valencay is an imposing building in the renaissance style and was once the home of Napoleon‘s Foreign Minister, Talleyrand. A guided tour through the castle leaves a good impression of life at the beginning of the 19th Century. Not far away is Nohant which was the home of the author George Sand for many years -as a result there is an annual Festival of Culture in thwe town.
