| The Département Haute-Marne is situated in the north east of France in the Region of Champagne Ardenne. Chaumont has much to offer including a visit to the 11th Century castle of the Dukes of Champagne. A stroll through the town will take you past the tanneries which bear witness to the economic past of the region just as the Jesuit Chapel from the 18th Century represents the faith of the population. Railway enthusaists will be fascinated by the 600 meter long railway viaduct built in 1857 and which has often been used in making flims.
Not far from Saint-Dizier is the lake of Der-Chantecoq, Europe‘s largest artificial lake. The lake has become a mecca for lovers of watersports. Naturelovers have plenty to keep them busy when they watch the thousands of cranes that stop here on their migration from Rügen to the south of France. Near the lake there is also an open-air museum and the Route of Half-Timbered 16th Century Churches makes an interesting excursion.
Castle Cirey is one of the most visited places in the area as it was the home of the literary giant, Voltaire. The highpoint of the visit is the small theatre which numbers amongst the oldest in France. The famous politician and ex-President of France, Charles-de-Gaulle, had his country estate nearby in Colombey-les-Deux Eglises and a visit to the museum is recommended. After his retirement from political life de Gaulle lived on the estate La Boisserie until his death. The economy of the region is dominated by cattle raising and metalworking industries.
