I could not have made a better decision as far as accommodations are concerned. Hotel Nothnagel was above and beyond my expectations for a town the size of Darmstadt-Griesheim and was overall the most comfortable place where my husband and I stayed during our 2.5 week trip through Europe (this includes the 4-star hotel where we stayed in Munich). Our spotless room was large, even by stateside standards, with quality furniture, a comfy king-sized bed (the standard German twin beds side-by-side), an eating table, desk, full-sized couch, mini-bar and a good-sized bathroom with SHOWER (no bathtub, which is definitely my preference as one doesn’t have to maneuver the climb in and out), AC and large flat-screen TV. I particularly loved the sunny décor (reds and yellows) and the many windows that brightened the room (don’t worry, the drapes provide adequate shade when necessary). The hallways were also bright and wide and the elevators spacious—4 of us, together with suitcases, rode comfortably.
Mornings began with a delicious buffet breakfast consisting of an assortment of fresh rolls, pastries, cheese, meats, yogurt with various toppings, juices and hot beverages. I don’t know if this is standard for Hotel Nothnagel, but knowing that my husband and our accompanying friends were American, with American appetites and diets, Martin, the proprietor, offered us eggs to order with our breakfast. This was of course unheard of at any of our previous hotels. All of these delectables were included in the modest 90 euros per night. Martin gave us the personal touch and greeted us every morning -- he and his staff could not do enough to ensure that our stay was pleasant and our every need met. Martin, by the way, is fluent in English (having spent a summer working at a camp in northern California), but tolerated my long-forgotten German with grace. What I loved most about this family-owned and run hotel is the personal service and attention given to the guests. Certainly one can find clean, well-run hotels at modest rates, but where can one find a hotel that welcomes you with genuine warmth and care? For 3 days, truly the Hotel Nothnagel became my home away from home.
