| Freising, a large county town north of Munich, on the banks of the river Isar, is the fourth largest town in Upper Bavaria. It is the see of the archbishopric Munich and Freising. Even though Freising is not a metropolis, you will find a variety of nice hotel in the inner city as well as in the outskirts.
Munich’s airport is nearby, the town also being passed by the A92. Freising has its own train station and is connected to Munich’s inner city by a suburban train. There are consequently numerous large hotel chains between Erding (Munich’s airport) and Freising.
Freising has been one of Germany’s most relevant religious centres for the last 1,300 years.
Consequently Freising’s most renowned sight is the Cathedral Saint Maria and Corbinian (Mariendom), where the mortal remains of the local saint Corbinian are preserved. The building was begun in Roman style, but, after several fires, was rebuilt in Baroque style by the brothers Asam.
Next to the cathedral, there is the Diocese Museum, which contains two paintings by Rubens and over all is worth seeing.
We also recommend you to see the churches St Georg and St. Peter and Paul.
If you are interested in culture, you should see the Asam Theatre and the choir “capella vocale freising“. You should also have a look at the local event calendar.
The brewery Weihenstephan, which has been built in 1040 is Freising’s most important company and ranks as the World’s oldest brewery.
In the district Weihenstephan you will also find a well-known dairy and the College Weihenstephan specialised in agriculture, forestry, horticulture and food technology.
Freising offers a choice of nice, mainly small hotels and guesthouses as well as apartments and holiday homes.
The town’s restaurants, often middle-class and belonging to one the hotels, offer a delicious regional cuisine. But there are also restaurants offering foreign dishes such as Asian and Italian food.
