Leave the A40 at the Essen-Huttrop motorway junction, turn right at the next traffic lights and follow the train tracks. Pass through the railway underpass and turn left in the direction of Hauptbahnhof/main train station. On your left you will see the Hotel Ibis. a no-nonsense good value hotel. I have stayed there three times now and it has actually improved.
possibly a little TOO unadorned in some parts, e.g. corridors (though in principle I am in favour of plainness). The bedhead was rather extravagant in style, but that is a tiny detail.
