| The Département Yonne is in the north of France and includes parts of the Regions Burgundy, Champagne und Orléans. Auxerre has one of the most famous gothic buildings in Burgundy, the cathedral of St-Étienne with its 11th Century crypt.
The abbey of St-Germain d`Auxerre was built in the 6th Century and partially destroyed by the Hugenots in 1567 but the museum there, the Musée-Abbaye St-Germain, tells the story of the abbey and in the crypt there are some of the oldest frescos in France. The whole area is well known for its excellent wines as Sauternes is not far from Auxerre and indeed there is still a convent in the town that produces red wine which can only be obtained in half bottles by those in the know.
Avallon is situated on the top of a steep cliff and surrounded by medieval walls. The clock tower, the Tour de l`Horloge, from the 15th Century houses an exhibition on the fortifications and further local history can be studied in the Musée-de-l`Avallonnais. There are also many famous works by Dürer and Toulouse-Lautrec to be seen in the region. The convent church of St-Lazare is said to contain remains of Lazarus of Bethlehem.
The Palais du Condé was the once of the Condé family in the 18th Century but now contains the Musée du Costume which traces the history of fashion from the 17th to the 20th Century. Sens has the first gothic cathedral ever constructed dating from the middle of the 12th Century and the museum of medieval art in the bishops‘ palace can bevisited. It is easy to reach the region of Yonne via the motorways A 6 and A 71.
