| The Département Territoire de Belfort is in the east of France in the Region Franche-Comté. Belfort is the main town where on Place de la Republique the Monument of the Three Siéges which commemorates the three sieges of the city can be admired. On a cliff above the town is the castle from the 13th Century which was latter rebuilt into a citadel by the fortifications‘ specialist Vauban. The historic walls house a museum containing jewellery, weapons and paintings. The castle offers an excellent view over the whole of the city. The 22 meter long Lion of Belfort carved in red sandstone from the Vosges can also be seen.
Ronchamp should be visited whilst in the area as it has the pilgrimage church of Notre Dame du Haut which was designed by the architect Le Corbusier who was associated with the Bauhaus movement. Château Saglio dating from the 18th Century now houses the administration of the Technical University. The campus is interesting in that there is a modern leaning tower of glass. On strolling through the town you cannot fail to notice the blue painted Village Hall and the fountain in front of it which make a favourite photo.
