| The Département Haute Saône is in the east of France situated between Alsace, Lorraine and Burgundy. Should you visit Gray you will see the renaissance Town Hall and the Basilica of Notre-Dame from the 16th Century, which in 1948 was honoured by Pope Pius XII as he declared it a “Basilica Minor”. A visit to a perfomance in the theatre built in 1849 is an enjoyable experience.
Héricourt has an ancient Town Church dating from the 13th Century and the Musée Minal offers many interesting examples of the sculptor’s art and a large collection of historic photos. The 12th Century castle is the oldest building in the town. Lure is a good centre for exploring the nearby Vosges mountains. From the summit of the Grand Ballon, the highest point of the region there is an amazing view over the Rhine valley to the Black Forest and, on a really clear day, as far as the Alps. Wintersports, especially cross-country sking, are possible around the Lac du Ballon.
Vesoul was the birthplace of the painter Jean-Léon-Gérôme and many of his works can be admired in the Musée Georges Garret. It is easy to reach the area along the motorway A36.
The main economic activity is agriculture and dairy farming producing Comté and Morbier cheeses with their characteristic ash stripes.
