| The Département Doubs is in eastern France in the Region Franche-Comté. Besancon the main town is renowned for its watch and clock making. The chief landmark of the town is the Citadel where there is an aquarium and small zoo. The famous painting „The Virgin with the Saints“ can be admired in the cathedral of St. Jean de Besancon. Victor Hugo’s birthplace is to be found in the Grande Rue and can be visited. Many archeological remains and items depicting the history of the watch and clock making in Besancon can be found in the Musée des Beaux-Arts.
Should you travel to Montbéliard it is worth visiting the castle with its archeological and natural history exhibits. The whole park and castle was built in the 15th Century by Henriette of Württemberg as Montbéliard was part of Württemberg for 400 years and is sometimes still called by its German name of Mömpelgard. The Temple of Saint-Martin was the first Protestant church in France. The Hôtel Beurnier-Rossel has an exhibition about the history of the town. The Royal Salt Factory in Arc-et-Senans is fascinating and the huge building was still used up until 1895. It is now denominated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Inside there is a museum about the salt production and the life of the builder of the installation, Claude-Nicolas Ledoux. It is easy to reach the Département Doubs via the motorways A5 and A36, as well as by fast TGV Dijon-Besancon.
