| The Département Ariege is in the south of France in the Region Midi-Pyrénées bordering the Spanish frontier. Foix is the largest town and is well known for the ancient castle above the town which was once the seat of the Counts of Foix. The regional museum has much of interest on the local area and customs. The abbey church of Saint Volusien is notable with its square bell tower. The main streets of the town,Rue de Labistour and Rue des Marchands, meet at the unusual Goose Fountain.
The ruined castle of Montségur perched on precipitous cliffs was the last stronghold of the Cathars whose beliefs still have a strong influence on customs here. A trip in a punt through the underground river of the river Labouiche is a memorable experience. The Romans discovered the mineral water springs at Ax-les-Thermes which is now a populer stopping off point en route to Andorra and Spain. Nearby is also the modern ski resort of Ax 3 Domaines. Further down the valley of the Ariege is the town of Tarascon-sur-Ariege with its 14th Century gothic church.
The Département of Ariege is easily reached along the motorways A 10 and A 20 via Paris and Toulouse. Airports are to be found in Toulouse and Montpellier. In former times iron ore mining and forestry were the mainstays of the economy. Nowadays tourism and fish farms are more important.
