| The Département Mayenne is in western France in the Region Pays de la Loire. Laval is a medieval town dominated by the imposing 12th Century castle on a cliff above the river Mayenne with its circular keep where the central part of the tower is said to be the oldest in France. The castle is also home to a museum of naive painting. The cathedral possesses a Flemish altar with side wings.
Sainte-Suzanne is another picturesque medieval town with a remarkably well-preserved store house of William the Conqueror from the 11th Century where it is possible to learn something of the structure of the earthworks. The Dolmen of Erves have also to be seen since it is thought that they date from 6,000 years ago. Further remains have been found in Ernée and the Town Museum has Roman remains and also a grave from the time of the Huns.
The 18th Century castle of Craon built from white Loire stone is a popular destination as it has gardens and a park laid out in English and French styles., The Départment is easily reached via the motorway A28 and the Route Nationale 12.
