| Due to its diversity Amsterdam is ideal for business travelers as well as people on a short trip. With that much hotels it can appeal to all kinds of taste. But please focus on the location of the hotel when picking one. Even though Amsterdam is relatively small compared to other world cities, if offers more than fifty famous museums, a huge number of historical sights and countless possibilities to make the night into day.
Sights
Among the most famous museums are the Van Gogh museum, the museum of the city Amsterdam and the Rijksmuseum. But there are also curiosities among the museums, such as the “Marihuana Museum”, the “Sex and Erotica Museum” or, interesting for football fans, the “Ajax Museum”. Next to them you will find museums offering classic or modern art as well as exhibitions of film or press. If you intend to visit quite a few museums, we can recommend the Museumskaart. It costs 29.95 EUR, including administrative costs, for adults, it grants you entry to more than 400 museums in all of Holland and is valid for one year.
Further sights include the canals, the king’s palace, the Vondelpark or the Albert Cuip market, to name just a few. Exactly 165 canals were built in mainly the 17th century und were used to transport goods between the harbour and warehouses, but also for effluent disposal. A roundtrip on the canals is especially beautiful at night, with all the canals being illuminated.
The king’s palace with its court yard, the so-called Dam, is located in the city centre. Adjacent to the Dam you will find Madame Tussaud’s wax museum.
Also in the city centre you will find the Vondelpark, a nicely arranged park with little ponds, cafés and restaurants, only 5 minutes away from the entertainment district.
The Albert Cuip market is the most famous street market of Amsterdam. It is located in the modern district of Pijp.
If you want to go out at night, make sure to see the red light district. It is located near the main station, between Neumarkt and Dam.
Tips for travel
When travelling to Amsterdam you should make sure to book your hotel in advance, since tourists are frequenting the city throughout the year. There is a variety of hotels in the city, so there will be one to meet your taste. When choosing one, please consider the location in the city, the connection to the airport and the availability of public transportation or the parking facilities respectively. The airport Amsterdam Schiphol offers connections to the city centre by train every 10 minutes. Starting at the main station you have availability to all means of public transportation, which will bring you safely into your hotel in the city. If you intend to use public transport when visiting Amsterdam, we recommend you to buy the Amsterdam Card. The card costs 33.- EUR upward, depending on the length you wish to use it. It grants you free entry to nearly all of the museums, a 25% discount in diverse restaurants, free usage of all means of public transportation.
You can also reach the city centre by taxi, for about 30-35.- EUR. We need to give you a warning if you intend to enter Amsterdam by car. When choosing your hotel, please make sure that it offers sufficient parking facilities for their guests. Please also note that there are very few parking facilities in the city centre and that most of the streets there are only one-way.
Industry
The most famous companies located in Amsterdam are the brewery Heineken and the electronics group Philips. Adjacent you will find the computer firm Cisco Systems and Dutch high street banks like Rabobank or ABN AMRO. Amsterdam is the second biggest harbour in the Netherlands, topped only by Rotterdam.
