A stay in the Rhineland will bring you to an attractive landscape which stretches over the Federal States of Rhineland Palatinate and North Rhine Westfalia. There are very many hotels in the regions of the Lower Rhine, Bergisches Land and the Westerwald. Aachen is on the border with Belgium and has a magnificent cathedral which was used as the place of coronation for the German emporers and contains a magnificent marble throne of Charlemagne and also a shrine containing his bones. The Fish Market is idyllic with its old patrician houses. Aachen is also a spa town and has a spa hall designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
If your journey takes you to Wuppertal you will be in the centre of the Bergisches Land. A unique sight in Wuppertal is the suspended railway built 100 years ago which still runs above the river between the suburbs of Elberfeld, Vorwinkel and Barmen and which forms an essential part of public transport in the area. In the Von der Heydt Museum there are Dutch, French and German paintings from many epochs. The famous dance theatre of Pina Bausch in the suburb of Barmen is also well worth a visit. The many events associated with the Carnival each year in Mainz draw visitors from far and near and in the Gutenberg Museum it is possible to see the birth of printing using the moveable type printing press. The famous Gutenberg bible is on display here. One of the best loved excursions is a trip along the river Rhine on one of the beautifully restored paddle steamers or a walk along the Rheinhöhenweg high above the river.
