The region of the Ruhr is the largest conurbation in Germany and there are many hotels in each of the large towns of the region which is changing its image from the former „Coal Basin“ to one with more and more attractions for the tourist. Bochum is in the heart of the region and has the German Museum of Mining with the 68 meter high pithead gear from which there is an excellent view over the area. Here the tourist can experience coal mining at first hand. The show “Starlight Express” draws many visitors to the town - the charming story of the little engine „Rusty“ will certainly charm young and old.
Dortmund is the main city of the Ruhr and in the Marienkirche there is an altar created by Konrad von Soest. A carved altar from Antwerp is to be found in the St. Petri church. The pedestrianised shopping street of “Westenhellweg” has shops to suit all tastes and pockets and whilst there it is worthwhile visiting the Natural History Museum. The Westfalenhalls in Dortmund are the venue for many sporting and cultural events.
