Jena is a university city in central Germany on the river Saale. It is one of Thuringia’s most interesting cities, which is not only due to its famous poets Goethe and Schiller, but also to the fact that it is a centre of science, which has won the city the honour of being awarded the title “City of Science 2008”.
Jena is home to numerous well-known enterprises and their museums, e.g. the Zeiss factory, the glass manufacturer Schott as well as Jenoptik. These companies are well-renowned on the national as well as on the international market. The world’s oldest planetarium, Zeiss Planetarium, is located in Jena. You may also see the legendary Zeiss microscope.
A famous sight in Jena is Schiller’s garden house in the alley Schillergässchen, where the poet Friedrich Schiller wrote some of his most famous works, such as Maria Stuart, Wallenstein and Die Jungfrau von Orleans (The Maiden of Orleans). A memorial site at the Botanic Garden reminds of his friend, the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
