Goslar is a historic town in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is the administrative centre of the district of Goslar and located on the northwestern slopes of the Harz hills. Goslar and its mines are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city Goslar is traversed by the river Goslar and located near the Grasse barrage and the Oker barrage. Goslar is neighbouring the municipalities: (clockwise from the North) Liebenburg, Vienenburg, Bad Harzburg, Clausthal-Zellerfeld, Langelsheim. There are also larger towns in close proximity Hildesheim (50 km / 31 miles), Salzgitter (30 km / 18.6 miles), Wolfenbüttel (35 km / 21.75 miles), Braunschweig / Brunswick (50 km / 31 miles), Magdeburg (100 km / 62 miles), Nordhausen (70 km / 43.5 miles) und Göttingen (70 km / 43.5 miles).
Goslar was founded in 922 by Henry I. and ranks among the historic centres of silver mining. The town looks back on a history of more than 1,000 years and has a beautiful historic city with a market square, a town hall, wonderful half-timbre houses, patrician houses, numerous churches and a variety of shops, restaurants and cafés.
Goslar provides a choice of very nice hotels, guest houses, apartments and hostels, which offer every kind of comfort and very good cuisine. It is a short way from the hotels to the inner city with its neat shops, restaurants and cafés.
Goslar’s most popular sights are The Mediæval Imperial Palace of Goslar (Kaiserpfalz), the market square with its Gothic town hall and a church, the large holy cross, the small holy cross, the cathedral’s atrium, the chapel St. Aegidienkaplelle, the patrician house Brusttuch (1521), the house St. Annenhaus (1488), the Siemens House (1693), the mill Lohmühle (16th century), the congregation St. Peter and Paul, the church Stephanikirche, the congregation St. Mariae, the church St. Jakobi, the Roman Church (1073), the chapel Klauskapelle, the ruins of the convent St. Georg and the town fortification.
You should not miss to visit some of the numerous museums, such as the Musical Instrument and Doll Museum, the Pewter Figures Museum, the Monks' House (Mönchehaus Museum) for Contemporary and Modern Arts, the Museum of the Late Middle Ages, the Mining Museum (Rammelsberg) and the Goslar Museum.
The most important annual events are the celebration of Walpurgis night as well as the shooting match and folk festival.
For recreation Goslar and its surroundings offer the Aquantic swimming park at Osterfeld, the Aloha adventure pool Aqua Land in Osterode, the Silberhorn swimming pool and the skittle centre.
The most popular destinations fort rips from Goslar are the snake farm Schladen, the game reserve Bad Harzburg and the Harz national park.
